Emmy, a NYC-based tech startup, launches a new service to address a marketplace gap

NEW YORK, Nov. 20, 2017 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Shahara Ahmad-Llewellyn first thought of the idea for Emmy in 2011 when two different friends called her and asked for her assistance getting home after a procedure, but she wasn't available to accompany them.

Declining their requests made her feel awful, and her thoughts turned to wondering how much this must happen on a daily basis. Then, her nephew experienced great distress trying to navigate his way to the airport with a back injury and two small children. As a result, the family had to miss their flight, something that could have easily been avoided if there had been an Emmy there to help at the time.

However, it wasn't until 2015 that she really got serious about launching a solution to these types of situations. "I just kept waiting for someone else to do it," she said. Soon, Emmy was born.

Ms. Ahmad-Llewellyn is a serial entrepreneur who has started, owned, operated and sold several different companies since 1972. In 1974, she helped to pioneer the creation of home care in New York City--she has always been passionate about making sure people feel comfortable and safe.

Co-founders Nick Farina and Ting Guo are equally dedicated to the idea of providing a backup plan for when your friends and family are not available. Mr. Farina, an angel investor and serial entrepreneur, was introduced to Ms. Ahmad-Llewellyn by the same nephew who was the tipping point in the creation of Emmy. Ms. Guo, a graduate of Columbia Business School and a Bain alumnae, has a background in building socially-conscious teams and early-stage startups.

"Emmy is for people who need someone there in that moment." Ms. Guo said. "There are many different uses for Emmy, but our whole goal is to help people get to where they need to go safely. That's why all of our Emmys are vetted with multiple interviews and a background check before they're allowed onto our platform. You can trust and rely on Emmy, whenever you need help getting door-to-door."

Several local healthcare providers have already signed up for Emmy, recommending it as an option for post-procedure accompaniment to their patients. Emmy's partners are Sinai Union Square, Sinai 16th Street, Westside GI, Sinai Chelsea, Bespoke Surgical, and Sinai West.
